Curriculum

Cactus language courses are available at different levels to suit students with and without prior language skills.

Studied in sequence, the levels are designed to take students from complete beginner through to advanced level, with different entry points along the way, so that the program can be picked up at any stage, based on existing language skills.

It generally takes more than one part-time group language courses to sufficiently cover one CEFR*/ACTFL** level and move on to the next with confidence. The Cactus levels structure reflects this. Learn more.

Each course or level can also be studied independently to achieve set learning goals or refresh language skills at the chosen level.

To understand what you will learn in each course, read What will I learn? below. For an understanding of what you can expect to achieve at each level, read What progress will I make at each level? below.

Courses run consecutively throughout the year with breaks in between course units and for Christmas (and public holidays), allowing you to keep up and progress your language skills to a higher level through regular exposure and practice.

What level am I?

If you are unsure where to start or progress to, take our online level test and read our level descriptions for guidance.

What will I learn?

Our Course Outlines give an overview of the content and learning framework of Cactus part-time group courses and include themes, grammar and vocabulary you can typically expect to cover. These are intended as a guide only and our teachers may at times adapt the course content to suit the specific level, aims and interests of the class.

What progress will I have made by the end of the level?

Our 'Can Do' Statements provide a guide to what you can expect to achieve at each level and also shows what progress you can expect to make if you stick with it and carry on studying subsequent levels. These are guides only and other factors will affect your rate of progress, e.g. your prior language skills and base level, how proficient you are at picking up new languages, your level of participation in class and revision (and homework) outside of class. It will partially also depend on how difficult (or dissimilar) the language you are learning is (from your native language).

The teachers

Our courses are taught by fully qualified, experience foreign language teachers of native-speaker ability. They provide a quality interactive learning experience at all levels and are able to target individual learning goals and skill gaps. They are also able to enrich your language learning with cultural context and insights.

Methodology

Cactus trainers will adopt a 'learner centred' approach to modern language teaching, which enables them to meet your individual needs. Courses cover practice in all 4 skill areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing; however, you will find the focus of our Cactus Foreign Language Courses is on speaking and listening - the main requirements of today's modern language learner. Teachers will use the target language, activities will be communicative, and the language learnt will be relevant to you.

Course Materials

For all Cactus Foreign Language Courses you will be supplied with course materials, which form the basis of your study.

Rated 5 out of 5 by I would definitely recommend Cactus to other language learners. The teachers are very professional and the campus is convenient and state-of-the-art! June 29, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by I have taken many language courses and find that I learn better when the atmosphere is fun and not serious. Structure is importanant but as an adult with a very hectic work schedule, the stress of missing a class or not having my homework done is not conducive to my learning. Antonella is a serious teacher but she was also light and fun in her approach and I learned a lot because I was much more relaxed through the process. June 10, 2011
