Cactus language courses are available at different levels to suit students with and without prior language skills.
Studied in sequence, the levels are designed to take students from complete beginner through to advanced level, with different entry points along the way, so that the program can be picked up at any stage, based on existing language skills.
It generally takes more than one part-time group language courses to sufficiently cover one CEFR*/ACTFL** level and move on to the next with confidence. The Cactus levels structure reflects this. Learn more.
Each course or level can also be studied independently to achieve set learning goals or refresh language skills at the chosen level.
To understand what you will learn in each course, read What will I learn? below. For an understanding of what you can expect to achieve at each level, read What progress will I make at each level? below.
Courses run consecutively throughout the year with breaks in between course units and for Christmas (and public holidays), allowing you to keep up and progress your language skills to a higher level through regular exposure and practice.
If you are unsure where to start or progress to, take our online level test and read our level descriptions for guidance.
Our Course Outlines give an overview of the content and learning framework of Cactus part-time group courses and include themes, grammar and vocabulary you can typically expect to cover. These are intended as a guide only and our teachers may at times adapt the course content to suit the specific level, aims and interests of the class.
Our 'Can Do' Statements provide a guide to what you can expect to achieve at each level and also shows what progress you can expect to make if you stick with it and carry on studying subsequent levels. These are guides only and other factors will affect your rate of progress, e.g. your prior language skills and base level, how proficient you are at picking up new languages, your level of participation in class and revision (and homework) outside of class. It will partially also depend on how difficult (or dissimilar) the language you are learning is (from your native language).
