One of the Southern Slavonic languages, Serbian is used to describe the official language of Serbia and one of the official languages of Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina. It is closely related to Croatian and Bosnian and is based on 'Ekavian', the variant of the shared Serbo-Croat language formerly spoken in Belgrade, and 'Ijekavian' spoken in western Serb areas. Serbian uses both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets.
