Pathway Description

The Language Learning Pathway was written by Cactus, and was created following the Common European Framework specifications. The pathway provides you with a clear description of the language skills you will achieve by the end of each course.

Survival Course

By the end of this program you will be able to understand and use:

Functional vocabulary – you are familiar with basic phrases; you can introduce yourself, ask and answer questions about personal details such as where you live, what you do; you can understand basic instructions, colors, cardinal numbers

Grammar – you can use present tenses in spoken form to describe yourself; formulate simple questions; recognize different parts of speech and word order

Pronunciation – you can recognize individual and blended key sounds

Cultural awareness – you can recognize some of the social norms and customs of the target language, understand how to study the language independently (e.g. self-study language centers, online, study groups, etc); understand your own learning style.


Beginner A1.1

By the end of this program you will be able to understand and use:

Functional vocabulary – you are familiar with everyday expressions and basic phrases; you can introduce yourself and others, ask and answer questions about personal details such as where you live, routines and people you know; you can understand basic instructions, colors, cardinal numbers

Grammar – you can use present tenses in spoken and written form to describe your personal interests; write basic sentences, including date and time and place; recognize different parts of speech and word order

Pronunciation – you can recognize individual and blended key sounds and have an idea of regular speech patterns

Cultural awareness – you can recognize the social norms and customs of the target language, understand how to study the language independently (e.g. self-study language centers, online, study groups, etc); understand your own learning style.


Beginner Plus A1.2

By the end of this program you will be able to understand and use:

Functional vocabulary – you can make conversation in English about yourself, family and immediate surroundings, interact in a simple way with people talking slowly and clearly; you can handle easy telephone calls

Grammar –you can use present and past tenses in spoken and written form, and describe simple narratives

Pronunciation - you can recognize aspects of connected speech and develop suitable intonation to express yourself clearly in short conversations

Cultural awareness –you can recognize the gestures and body language of the target language.


Elementary A2

By the end of this program you will be able to understand and use:

– you can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to familiar areas, (e.g. basic personal and family information, employment, shopping, local geography) and in routine or familiar matters

Grammar – you can use different grammatical structures (present, past and future); you can describe in simple terms aspects of your background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need; you can talk about personal ideas and plans

- you can recognize and use appropriate intonation to express yourself accurately in social conversational interactions;

– you can learn and use common idiomatic expressions of the target language.


Lower Intermediate B1

By the end of this program you will be able to understand and use:

Functional vocabulary – you can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken; you can understand the main points on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc; you can conduct conversations on topics that you are unprepared for

Grammar – you can use more complex grammatical structures to express aspect and modality; produce connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; you can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans

Pronunciation - you can use the appropriate intonation in social and business conversational interactions

Cultural awareness - you can use some colloquialisms of the target language appropriately.


Intermediate B2

By the end of this program you will be able to understand and use:

Functional vocabulary – you can communicate with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; you can understand the key ideas of a complex text on both concrete and abstract topics including technical discussions in your field of specialization; you can understand the main ideas expressed on radio and television

Grammar – you can use more complex grammatical structures; you can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain your viewpoint on a current issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options

Pronunciation – you can use strategies to negotiate and clarify your meaning

Cultural awareness –you have built on your knowledge of idioms and colloquialisms in the target language.


Upper Intermediate C1

By the end of this program you will be able to understand and use:

Functional vocabulary – you can use language effectively and flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes; you can produce clear, complete, well-structured texts on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and linking devices; you can understand nearly everything you hear, see or read on television or the radio

Grammar – you are familiar with complex tenses, aspects and modality; you can confidently work with a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning

Pronunciation – you can use expressions to communicate fluently and spontaneously without unnatural pauses and hesitation

Cultural awareness – you are familiar with most idiomatic expressions of the target language.


Advanced C2

By the end of this program you will be able to understand and use:

Functional vocabulary – you can understand virtually everything you hear or read; you can write texts in an appropriate style; you understand literary and specialized texts

Grammar – you can use grammatical structures confidently, and extract information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing and summarizing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation; you understand the study skills and strategies needed to improve your language level

Pronunciation – you can identify and understand different dialects and regional differences in the target language, and identify linguistic differences between your level of the target language and a native speaker; you can express yourself spontaneously, fluently and precisely, differentiating between finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations; you accent and its effect on your speech is minimal

Cultural awareness - you are familiar with the social, political and business etiquette of the target language.
